The ANZICS Database Management Committee:

In 1990, a group of farsighted ANZICS members layed the foudations for what has come to be known as 'The ANZICS Database'. At the ANZICS Annual Scientific Meeting in Adelaide that year, two fundamentally important decisions were taken:

  1. There would be a core data set that everyone taking part in the ANZICS database project would collect.
  2. There would be a Standard Data Format developed, which would enable data to be sent to a central registry.

During 1990/1991, a central data storage facility was developed at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, with software being developed to enable analysis of individual hospital data, and comparison with 'national aggregate data' (for those hospitals contributing). Much of this work was possible due to specific project funding from NSW Health and due to the efforts of Drs Rob Herkes and David McWilliam.

The DOS based program (ICON2) was developed and remained the mainstay of data collection for many years. With the advent of Microsoft Windows and following incompatibilities with the newer Pentium processors, there was a need for upgraded software which is now available.

Joint Federal and State funding now supports the database which has been relocated from it's origins at RPA to ANZICS House. With this funding the future of the Adult Database would appear secure.

The ANZICS Adult Database is now one of the largest repositories for ICU patient data in the world.
