John set-up one of the first Critical Care Outreach services in the UK, was first Chair of the UK National Outreach Forum; and Programme Lead for Critical Care Outreach at the Department of Health Modernisation Agency 2002-2005.
He was later Clinical Lead – for Deterioration, then Sepsis – of the University College London Partners Patient Safety Collaborative 2010-17, and President of the international Society for Rapid Response Systems, 2017-2019.
John is currently National Clinical Advisor for acute deterioration at NHS England, sits on NHS England / NHS Improvement working groups leading the creation of new Enhanced Care Areas, and Co-Chairs the NHSE/I Patient Worry & Concern Task and Finish Group (under the national Acute Deterioration Board) developing clinician, patient and family worry and concern as means to improve recognition of deterioration, as well as the national Managing Deterioration Safety Improvement Programme Advisory Group, a US Society of Critical Care Medicine Taskforce, and the Royal College of Physicians National Early Warning Score Independent Advisory Group.
Previously, he was UK clinical lead of the European Union funded Horizon 2020 ‘Nightingale’ programme ‘Connecting Patients and Carers using wearable sensor technology’.
