Australian and New Zealand Paediatric Intensive Care Registry (ANZPICR)

The ANZICS Paediatric Study Group (PSG) established the Australian and New Zealand Paediatric Intensive Care Registry (ANZPICR) in 1997. All specialist Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) in Australia and New Zealand submit to ANZPICR. In addition to the PICU data, ANZPICR also has data contributed by all Children’s Critical Care Units (CCCUs) in ANZ, with paediatric data also submitted from more than 20 general ICUs (ICUs that care for adults and children).

  • In Australia and New Zealand, the specialist PICUs are located in university-affiliated children’s hospitals which are tertiary referral centres for paediatric care (3 in NSW, 2 in Vic, 1 in Qld 1 in SA, 1 in WA, 1 NICU/PICU in Tas, and 1 in NZ).
  • Outside state capital cities, some children are admitted to Level III Adult ICUs, whilst other children are transported to specialised PICUs.
  • In all states, children with cardiac conditions are admitted to specialist PICUs. In New Zealand, the Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland is the tertiary referral centre for paediatrics, including cardiac surgery. In some regions of New Zealand children are commonly admitted to adult ICUs.

Data Submissions

Data submissions to ANZPICR are quarterly and are based on the date of ICU discharge. For the ANZPICR data collection, data from a submitting unit is only loaded into the data warehouse after the file has been validated and no remaing queries.

The ANZICS CORE portal is used for the uploading of data and reporting of the paediatric data submissions.  Instructions for using the portal and the ANZPICR data submission schedule for 2018 are listed below.

ANZPICR Data Submission Schedule

The schedule below is a guide when submissions are due, the portal will accept all ANZPICR data submissions at any time prior to the due date.

Data Reporting

The ANZICS CORE Portal  has been designed to provide dynamic reporting with the ability to filter reports based on time period and patient subgroups.

The CORE Portal utilises the single log on for all ANZICS Registries. Instructions for using the portal to generate reports are given below.

In addition to comparative reports generated by ICU staff, the ANZPIC Registry also produces an annual report. To view all available annual reports, please click here.

PIM3 Mortality Prediction Model

The ANZPIC Registry uses the Paediatric Index of Mortality (PIM) model for benchmarking. The latest version of the PIM model is PIM3. While the published PIM3 model has been developed using data from multiple countries and provides an international comparison, it is important to also have coefficients based on regional data when comparing SMRs for units in a country or region. Therefore, within the ANZ region, an ANZ calibration of the PIM3 model was generated using ANZPIC Registry data from 2014 and 2015, and is called PIM3-anz15.

For further details of the PIM3 and PIM2 models, see the link below to the ANZPICR Information Booklet for PIM2/3. A PIM3 calculator is also available in Excel form.
